Dear Canfield Families,
As you may have noticed in the Superintendent’s Newsletters last spring, this year at the Kindergarten-6th grade level, we are updating our current reading practices to include some Ohio Best Practices in reading. We have adopted the Balanced Reading Framework with Guided Reading. Although this is new for Canfield, many successful school systems have been using Guided Reading for several years.
Here is how a Balanced Reading Framework looks:
Teachers in Canfield were trained in the Balanced Framework and Guided Reading last year and will be supported in their efforts this year as well. Please feel free to contact me with any concerns or questions. My email is [email protected] .
Respectfully,
Carol Young (District Literacy Coach)
As you may have noticed in the Superintendent’s Newsletters last spring, this year at the Kindergarten-6th grade level, we are updating our current reading practices to include some Ohio Best Practices in reading. We have adopted the Balanced Reading Framework with Guided Reading. Although this is new for Canfield, many successful school systems have been using Guided Reading for several years.
Here is how a Balanced Reading Framework looks:
- Read Aloud is the first component. The teacher reads high quality literature and the children are taught the new Common Core standards through rich conversations and analysis of author’s craft.
- Shared Reading helps children decode and understand grade level text with the support of the teacher in a whole group setting. There may also be a Word Study/Language Arts piece that aligns with the Common Core standards
- Guided Reading is taught in small groups at your child’s instructional level to ensure that he/she is taught on their learning edge. This is the best way to make sure all children make the most progress in reading, Children are not memorizing stories, they are using reading strategies on a new piece of text every time they meet in a reading meeting. This means that they may not be bringing home basal readers to practice and memorize.
- Reading Progress is monitored through comprehension questions that go beyond literal meaning of the story. The child’s reading behaviors are also monitored through recording what the child is reading (Reading Records) and analyzing what he/she needs to become a better reader.
- Independent Reading is also a critical piece of reading. Your child will learn to read different genre, track their reading (in upper grades) and write about what they have read. This is also an important part of the new standards for reading in Ohio.
Teachers in Canfield were trained in the Balanced Framework and Guided Reading last year and will be supported in their efforts this year as well. Please feel free to contact me with any concerns or questions. My email is [email protected] .
